Presidential Fellowships

The Presidential Fellowship, the Elizabeth Clay Howald Presidential Fellowship, and the SBC Presidential Fellowship recognize the outstanding scholarly accomplishments and potential of graduate students entering the final phase of their dissertation research or terminal degree project. These fellowships provide financial support so that the fellow may devote one year of full-time study to the completion of the dissertation or degree project unimpeded by other duties. Recipients of this award embody the highest standards of scholarship in Ohio State graduate programs.

Note: Graduate students cannot directly apply for these fellowships; candidates are nominated by their graduate program.

Eligible fields: The Presidential Fellowship and the Elizabeth Clay Howald Presidential Fellowship are open to students in all graduate fields of study. The SBC Presidential Fellowship is open to students whose dissertations focus on digital technology and information technologies.

Competition Deadlines:  Presidential Fellowship competitions are held in Autumn and Spring Quarters.  Nomination dossiers must be submitted to the Graduate School by the 3rd Friday of October for the autumn competition, and by the 3rd Friday of April for the spring competition.

Period of award: One year, nonrenewable.

Eligibility criteria: Students pursuing a doctoral degree or those in a three-year terminal degree program. Students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.6 on all graduate course work taken at Ohio State, have completed all course work for the degree, passed the Candidacy Examination (doctoral students), and have made sufficient progress on their dissertation or project so that evaluation of the research is possible.

Stipend: $1,800 per month.

Other allowances: $250 matching travel allowance in addition to Other Standard Fellowship Benefits.
