Message from the Dean

Colleagues,

As part of our commitment to diversity, I am pleased to announce that the Graduate School has created a fellowship program devoted to successfully recruiting students who have participated in Ohio State's Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) to an Ohio State graduate program. This fellowship program is designed as a partnership between the Graduate School and the admitting program.

By creating a competitive funding package that can be offered by mid-December, we believe more of these highly talented students will choose Ohio State.

All of us must be focused on achieving accountable results from our recruitment efforts. I am eager to hear your thoughts about this new fellowship program and efforts that are underway in your programs and colleges. We will talk more about results during our annual recruitment summit on December 15. I look forward to seeing you then.

Patrick S. Osmer
Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Dean of the Graduate School

Graduate School Policies and Services

Continuous Enrollment Policy

Last fall, the Graduate School established a continuous post-candidacy enrollment requirement for all students admitted to Graduate School Autumn Quarter 2008 and after. All such students who successfully complete the doctoral candidacy examination are required to be enrolled in every quarter of their candidacy (summer quarter excluded) until graduation. Implications for non-enrollment and conditions for leaves of absence and reinstatement were approved by the Graduate Council on November 16. The policy is available on the Graduate School homepage and is in the Graduate School Handbook.

Reminder: Please Use Required Forms and Follow Deadlines

Graduation Services is noticing an increase among graduate programs, advisors, and graduate students who are neglecting to turn in required forms on time. Failure to do so results in complications for students, including not being able to take an examination or graduate during the expected quarter. Contact: Beth Bucher, 292-7706.

  • Students must turn in their Notification of Candidacy Exam forms to the Graduate School at least two weeks prior to the oral portion of the exam.

  • Master's Examination Reports and Final Oral Examination Reports must be submitted to the Graduate School by Wednesday, November 25 for students graduating AU09.

  • Final electronic submission of theses and dissertations must be accepted and thesis approval (master's) or final approval (doctoral) forms and fees must be submitted to the Graduate School by Wednesday, December 2 for students graduating AU09.

Templates Available for Dissertation, Thesis, and D.M.A. Document Formatting

The Graduate School has developed templates to assist graduate students with formatting their dissertations, theses, and D.M.A. documents. Additional information about required formats for these documents can be found in the Graduate School's Guidelines for Formatting Theses, Dissertations, and D.M.A. Documents.
