Scott Herness named associate dean, Graduate School

Dr. Scott Herness, professor of oral biology, will be joining the Graduate School as associate dean. Current Associate Dean Elliot Slotnick, who has announced his retirement at the end of December after 12 years of service to the Graduate School, will be helping to acclimate Scott to the associate dean's responsibilities through autumn quarter.

Scott earned his Ph.D. in biology (psychobiology program) from The Florida State University, and he has extensive experience with graduate education. He is currently serving as graduate studies chair of the oral biology graduate program and previously served as chair of the neuroscience graduate program. In addition, Scott is chair of the division of oral biology in the College of Dentistry. His research focuses on the molecular and physiological basis of taste.

As associate dean, Scott will be a member of the senior leadership team of the Graduate School and will be the primary contact person for graduate studies chairs. He will also have general responsibility for Graduate School activities in graduate curriculum, graduate program development, Graduate School fellowship and tuition matching programs, and graduate admissions evaluations.
